The craft, DIY, printing, promotion, camping, and textile and fashion industries all employ round elastic for various purposes. Elastic cords are largely utilized in the textile industry, including sportswear, footwear, bags, accessories, haberdashery, jewelry, print, medical, furniture, and other industries. In the sportswear industry, it is used to shrink the back and leg portions of sweatpants. It is used in the textile industry to shrink clothing buttons and hoods. In addition, it is creating shoelaces in the footwear industry. Elastic cords are also used for crafting accessories and other hobbies.
Manufacturing Elastic Cords
Elastic cords are produced using tools called ‘muppets’. First, the elastic is braided by a machine using puppet-tool synchronized movements. The latex is kept stable and positioned in the middle of the muppets during the braiding process. Then, the yarns are fastened to the muppets and braided using their bobbins in a circular motion. Finally, elastic cords are utilized with proper muppets due to widths. Muppets have widths of 8, 12, 16, and 24 mm.
Types of Elastic Cords
The types of elastic cords include:
Polyester Cord
The core of a polyester cord cable is elastic. Several different hues of polyester are used to cover this cord. This elastic cord is used for hair accessories and other purposes where the cord is exposed in the final design. Polyester elastic cord is often used in marine applications.

Stretch Floss Cord
Stretch floss cord is very small, the most popular sizes being 0.5 -0.7mm. It is made by weaving together several strands of elastic material. A stretch floss cord is easier to knot than single-strand cords.
Braided Elastic Cord
Braided elastic cord has parallel ridges running down its length to provide extra grip. However, braided elastic cord tends to thin out when stretched and lose flexibility when sewn. Therefore, braided elastic is often used in casings rather than direct stitching. In the textile industry, braided elastic is used in clothing sections like sleeves and necklines.
Synthetic Elastic Cord
Synthetic elastic cord is a synthetic fiber-braided elastic rope frequently used as a drawcord inside casings, on waistbands, bags, and other items.
Applications of Elastic Cords
- Jewelry pieces like bracelets and necklaces are created using elastic cords.
- They are utilized to create lanyards and headbands.
- Signs for adorning a school, dorm, or living environment are made with elastic cords.
- Elastic ropes can bundle toys, organize kitchen items, and hold up objects in fixed locations, like a bike in a garage.
- Bungee jumpers can use thick elastic ropes to propel themselves back up because an elastic cord can only be stretched so far before snapping back to its original shape.
Benefits of Elastic Cords
- An extremely flexible latex cord is called elastic.
- Due to the polyester cover, it is exceptionally robust and UV resistant.
